The interactive exhibition titled "School of Life — Green Burial Love Living On", organised by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) with the support of the Tuen Mun District Office concluded successfully at Tuen Mun Town Plaza. The four-day event, held from October 16 to 19, 2026, was the largest of its kind to date. In collaboration with Pok Oi Hospital Community Network on Life and Death Education (the Network) and more than 30 NGOs from various field, the event aimed to promote green burial and foster public awareness of life planning. The initiative drew wide public participation, providing an accessible platform for public to gain insights into life-and-death issues and reflect on the journey of life in a relaxing form. On the opening day, Assistant Director of FEHD, Mr. TSOI Ka-wai, and District Officer (Tuen Mun), Ms. WAN Yuet-ting, JP, accompanied by members of Tuen Mun District Council, visited the event to render their support and engage with the public.

The exhibition based on the theme of “Cuisine”, metaphorically linked to the "Five-way Expression”, i.e. expressing love, sorry, forgiveness, goodbye and thanks to the five fundamental flavours of sweet, sour, bitter, spicy, and savoury. The entire exhibition area had been decorated into a giant interactive Aeroplane Chessboard, attracting families spanning multiple generations. The familiar game design evoked nostalgic childhood memories while serving as a natural catalyst for family members to initiate meaningful dialogues on life-and-death issues. To engage participants across different age groups progressively break traditional taboos surrounding life-and-death, the venue featured a wide range of interactive amenities included 5-way themed interactive games, AI-powered camera, experiential workshops, silver-aged talent performances, interactive drama and thematic talks, allowing participants to gain a deeper appreciation of the profound meaning behind the " Five-way Expression ". Routine caregiving duties often leave little respite for carers to initiate conversations with senior family members regarding end-of-life arrangements. To address this, the event offered an array of family-friendly facilities, including:

• "5-Way Chessboard of Life"
  Participants played as the role of game pieces, advancing across the board by rolling dice through a mobile web application. Through the interactive gameplay, attendees were encouraged to review their life journeys and relationship with loved ones. While some took the opportunity to express appreciation and apologies that had previously gone unspoken in daily life, others began to consider making advance end-of-life arrangements and expressing their wishes to family members, thereby providing clear guidance for their loved ones in the future.
• "5-Way Expression Chef" motion-sensing game
  The game allowed both adults and children to immerse themselves in preparing familiar home-cooked dishes, such as “Creamed Corn with Minced Pork on Rice”, experiencing the warmth of emotional connection amidst joy and laughter. Elderly participants shared that cooking in front of an interactive screen was a novel and refreshing experience, reminding them that life, much like cooking, encompasses a spectrum of flavours, and underscored the importance of expressing love in a timely manner to leave no regrets. Upon completing the game, participants received a copy of the "Five- way Expression Recipe", enabling them to integrate these heartfelt blessings into their daily lives.
• AI-powered family photo station
  The AI station offered eight distinct themes and two artistic styles, creating precious family portraits to capture memorable moments for participants.

The exhibition incorporated high-energy K-pop dance and live band performances by senior performers. Beyond showcasing their talents, the seniors shared their life experiences with optimistic, open-minded and forward-looking spirit.

In addition, an interactive drama based on the board game "The Choice", which focuses on life-and-death dilemmas, struggles and emotional reconciliation was performed. Audiences were invited to step into the characters' dilemmas, contemplate pivotal moments in life, make meaningful choices, and walk alongside their loved ones through challenging times. Participants expressed that through this immersive experience, discussing life-and-death issues was no longer a taboo topic but served as a valuable opportunity to enhance family communication and express heartfelt feelings.

Through series of thematic talks on advance life planning by guest speakers sharing insights on pre-planning, participants understood how explore options, structure personal wishes, and reach family consensus could ensures a dignified conclusion to life. By articulating end-of-life arrangements and exploring green burial and commemoration methods, individuals can make the most suitable decisions to their personal and family circumstances, ensuring their final wishes are honoured while preparing their loved ones for the future.

More than 30 NGOs set up booths in “Life and Death Bazaar” to introduce community resources and services on life planning and end-of-life service. FEHD also set a service counter to introduce green burial. Hundreds of participants registered for green burial services and signing up for guided tours of remembrance gardens on the spot.

Community Outreach Initiatives to Promote Green Burial

The conclusion of the “School of Life” Interactive Exhibition at Tuen Mun Town Plaza marks the beginning of a broader life education campaign across the district. From October to December 2026, FEHD will launch community outreach initiatives across Tuen Mun, including public markets, Link shopping centres, public housing estate retail venues and district centres. These activities will feature roving mini-exhibitions, community talks and guided tours of remembrance gardens. The outreach activities aim to guide the public in understanding end-of-life options, encouraging early reflection and family communication to ensure love and personal wishes endure. Participants will also have the opportunity to obtain copies of the "Five- way Expression Recipe".

Inspired by this year's theme, " Reading the World: Cultural Legacy | Joyful Journeys," we transformed our booth into the "School of Life: Journey & Pages "—a uniquely themed booth designed around the comforting concept of a " Passenger Station of Life."
